Five years after their wedding, I reunited with Liz and Andrew to meet their incredible one-year-old, Forest for their family photos. There was something especially joyful about the way this family session unfolded so organically.

It can be a lot to meet someone new, especially when they are wielding a camera and pointing it at you. Despite my likely intimidating technology, Forest quickly came out of his shell. We started off surrounded by his favorite reads in their home library before heading to their backyard.

Once he was immersed in nature, Forest became even more inquisitive. It was lovely seeing how Liz and Andrew encouraged Forest to lead the way–every branch was a new discovery to be had. During a quick break inside, he grabbed two of his favorite treasures–sparkly ornaments–to bring outside for more adventures.

Some of my favorite family sessions are the ones without pre-planned props, where snacks are not tucked out of sight and kids have the freedom to be curious along the way. I loved seeing how quickly Forest warmed up to me, guiding me while holding my hand at certain points. It’s probably because he liked my glasses, but I’ll still take it as a win.

Thanks to Liz and Andrew and so many others who have trusted me to document their families this year. As a parent, it means a lot to be given the opportunity to reflect the ways I see love show up in its many forms.

Documenting neurodiverse families as an Autistic photographer

If you’re interested in having family photos, I’d love to be considered. I love documenting families, whether at home or a favorite park. Having photos taken as a family can be incredibly daunting, especially if you’re like me and may be neurodivergent or may have a neurodivergent child.

As an Autistic creative with two young neurodivergent children, I am comfortable meeting kids (and grown-ups) where they’re at, making sessions as accommodating as possible for all of those involved. That can often look like being told in-depth what to expect in advance. And having the utmost flexibility day-of if children need space or aren’t consenting to being photographed. Consent and autonomy are incredibly important to me. Finding ways for kids to be a part of the process, so we can photograph them in their element, is essential.
