Fairmount Park Pregnancy Photography
As one of the largest urban park systems in the country, Fairmount Park is packed with beautiful, varied backdrops. I love that every session photographed at Fairmount is vastly different than the other. For P + E’s session, we moved between two of my favorite spots within the park: the grounds surrounding the Horticulture Center and the tree-lined walkway near Shofuso Japanese House and Garden.
The Horticulture Center sits in the heart of West Fairmount Park. There’s expansive, green lawns, a beautiful reflecting pool, and flowering trees. For pregnancy photos, it gives you everything: wide environmental shots that show off the landscape, intimate close-ups near the water, and that magical light filtered through a canopy of spring trees. We weren’t quite there for cherry blossom season, but that didn’t stop us from taking advantage of the pink azaleas.
Shofuso Japanese House and Garden adds a completely different texture that feels like a world apart from the city. Thanks to Art-Reach’s ACCESS card program, I’ve had the pleasure of visiting Shofuso with my kids. Whether you’re planning a proposal, engagement session, family photos, or wedding, Shofuso is a unique venue to consider.
Queer Pregnancy Photos in Philadelphia
Much like my other sessions, my approach to pregnancy sessions is to photograph people the way they actually are together. That means posing that reflects your dynamic and language that uplifts your identities.
If you’re searching for queer maternity photos or inclusive pregnancy photography in Philadelphia, I’d love to be a part of affirming your growing family.
What to Expect at a Pregnancy Session
For P + E, we started in the late afternoon to take advantage of the soft, directional spring light. Here’s a rough sense of how a session like this flows:
Outfit changes are part of the plan. P + E brought two looks with different aesthetics. Giving yourself the option to shift the vibe mid-session means your gallery has variety without feeling like two separate shoots. It is also nice to have photos of you dressed casually, not only because it’s a comfort, but because it is how you likely look day-to-day. As your child grows, they will appreciate seeing those sides to the people you were before they got to know you.
Bring something meaningful if you want to. P + E brought a wildflower bouquet that made its way into some of my favorite photos—the colorful blooms against the white lace, the two of them sharing a kiss behind the flowers.
Move around. Some of the best pregnancy photos from this session happened when P + E were just walking, laughing, or being themselves between more directed moments. Movement creates genuine expression in a way that standing still rarely does.
Let the location do some of the work. The reflecting pool, gnarled trees, and cluster of azaleas all became part of their story. I’ll always be mindful of lighting and colors and how they interact compositionally within the environment.
