Patrick and Michael began their wedding day the way they do everything—together. The two got ready side by side before their ceremony at the Down Town Club in Philadelphia, a beautiful historic venue by Cescaphe in the heart of the city. From the first moments of the morning to the last song of the night, the day was a refreshing reflection of exactly who they are.

Historic Philadelphia Portrait Locations Near the Down Town Club
Before the reception, we slipped away to explore some of Philadelphia’s most beautiful historic locations for their couple portraits. Dock Creek, 18th Century Garden, and Merchant Exchange provided the perfect backdrops, with cobblestones, lush greenery, and centuries of stories behind every wall (plus solid people-watching). It’s worth noting that the Independence National Historical Park recently changed their photo permit policies and no longer require a permit for these locations.
Each location brought something different to the photos. Dock Creek offered harsh sunlight under a romantic willow tree, surrounded by unmistakable Old City atmosphere (and ahem, carefully edited-out construction). The 18th Century Garden brought softness and light. And Merchant Exchange gave us architecture that makes every frame feel cinematic. If you’re planning a Down Town Club wedding in Philadelphia and wondering where to take portraits nearby, these three spots are absolute gems and all within accessible reach of the venue (minus the bumpy cobblestone path).
The day was filled with moments I’ll never forget. Patrick and Michael shared a private first dance in the reception space before guests were allowed to enter. Just the two of them, no audience. And later, their sparkler entrance brought even more joyful energy into the room. But my favorite moments were the quiet ones. I always catch these glimpses when I’m taking individual portraits. The way a partner lights up when their person is in the spotlight. It’s such a quiet expression of love, and it never gets old.
Why Finding an LGBTQ+ Photographer Matters
When Patrick and Michael were planning their Philadelphia wedding, finding an LGBTQ+ photographer was a priority. They wanted a queer photographer who had a lot of experience photographing LGBTQ+ marriers. Someone who would bring genuine understanding to their day. As a pansexual, non-binary photographer, I don’t just welcome LGBTQ+ couples, I am a part of this community. I’m so proud to document their day with the nuances and understanding of what it means to be visible and vulnerable.
There’s something different about being photographed by someone who sees that part of your identity and celebrates it wholeheartedly. Who takes the responsibility seriously and uplifts the power of queer joy. This also trickles into how I operate as a photographer on the back-end, whether it’s my recommended affirming vendor list or the folks I hire as second photographers when needed. It was an honor to work alongside my friend, Rylan. He is also a part of the queer community and a companion in advocating for change in an industry that desperately needs it.
