Philadelphia maternity photos
It’s been a season of photographing Philadelphia maternity photos and I’m loving every second of it. Documenting pregnancy for people is something that is close to my heart as a parent of two. I love reliving the excitement of a growing family. It can be a lot of emotions to process as a due date approaches, so finding ways to celebrate each other along the way is important.
A few years ago, I had the pleasure of documenting J + D’s five year anniversary photo session. They both grew up in Philadelphia, met in the city, and are now starting a family.
During both of their photo sessions, they included their rescue pup, which always makes me happy. He even wore a “big bro” handkerchief this time around, which was especially endearing.
Connecting with camera shy individuals
Like so many of the folks I work alongside, J + D refer to themselves as a little “awkward and camera shy” at times (same!). I hope their photos make them feel as wonderfully cool as they appear to me.
It’s so natural to guide folks into pose suggestions when we are on the move. I liked their idea of visiting two locations, with a quick outfit change (and pup drop-off) in between. When sessions have fluidity built into them, it can feel nicely paced. Especially for fellow individuals who have ADHD and might do better when we mix it up and don’t stay at the same location the entire photo session.
Clients often assume they only have time to explore one location. By being somewhere like a city, we are in close proximity to many different spaces to venture in an hour or two. Also, having the convenience of ride-hailing services along the way doesn’t hurt.
Race Street Pier photo permits
I loved chasing J + D’s dog around Old Swedes Church together before driving to Race Street Pier for some excellent people-watching and sunset vibes. Old Swedes Church is a lush, historic backdrop for photos and incredibly dog-friendly. And Race Street Pier is always a favorite.
While Race Street Pier used to require a photography permit and fee, they no longer require permits to take photos at any of the Delaware River Waterfront Parks. This includes Race Street Pier, Cherry Street Pier, Blue Cross RiverRink Winterfest/Summerfest, Great Plaza, Penn’s Landing Marina, Spruce Street Harbor Park, Washington Avenue Pier, and Pier 68.
This change also comes with a heads up from me that as a result, there are almost always multiple sessions happening at once at Race Street Pier. I always try to be mindful of any other photo sessions taking place at the same time and giving them space as needed.
