When Madeline and Roy reached out about their backyard wedding in the Philadelphia suburbs, their inquiry stood out to me. They described themselves as a queer, Disabled couple who values community care, curiosity, and compassion above all else. It was lovely to see their values reflected on their wedding day. The celebration was beautifully supported by Events by Merida. I’ve had the pleasure of working with Merida multiple times. I always recommend her as a Philadelphia coordinator or wedding planner, especially for queer and/or marginalized folks.
Madeline and Roy shared how they wanted to have a wedding that went beyond celebrating a romantic, siloed love. Highlighting the joy of entering each others’ families and communities. While uplifting the people who’ve helped sustain them. I think their intimate wedding did just that.
Backyard wedding in Philadelphia suburbs
The marriers got ready together prior to their backyard wedding in Elkins Park. Something I noticed about Madeline and Roy was how present they were throughout the day. This was only further emphasized when I saw their matching arm tattoos with the phrase, “here I am.” I loved how they sat opposite to each other on a bench during their self-officiating ceremony, to fully address those circled around them.
Madeline wore her late father’s top hat from her parents’ marriage, while Roy wore his tie. We continued to honor those who have shaped them by taking photos under a tree in the backyard, where a beloved dog was buried. There were so many similarly sentimental details that did not go unnoticed.
It was an honor to join everyone in celebrating each other during Madeline and Roy’s wedding. I can’t thank them enough for including me during such an personal day.
