Society Hill engagement session
I met Niki and Grant for their Society Hill engagement session at The Athenaeum in Philadelphia, which borders Washington Square. Philadelphia Athenaeum – a historic member-supported library – was founded in 1814, decades before the advent of free public libraries. The staff was kind enough to tour us around and allow us the use of their reading room. The building was designed in an Italianate style and one of the first in the city to be built of brownstone.
After exploring the library, we went to La Colombe Coffee for some beverages before checking out a nearby plant shop. This is one of my favorite ways to approach an engagement session. Preparing with a few destinations in mind, but being open to organically exploring accessible spots we stumble upon along the way.
Niki is “an architectural designer by day and a volunteer nonprofit queer library Director of Operations by all other hours.” Grant is a firmware engineer who loves puzzles, Niki’s two cats, and discovering new music.
Non-binary love
Niki and Grant are two non-binary people in love who live in Boston. They’re having their self-uniting, autumn wedding at The Woodlands – not too far from where Niki is originally from – with enchanted dinner party vibes. The marriers are excited to introduce new friends to the city of Philadelphia. The Woodlands is one of my favorite queer-friendly, accessible Philadelphia wedding venues. I’ve written more about the venue in my Guide to Accessibility in Philadelphia Wedding Venues.
Please consider checking out QT Library to support their brick-and-mortar LGBTQIA+ library and community space for queer and trans folks. (Coming to Boston, MA). For transparency, I donated $702 to QT Library as part of my Give Back policy for the month of April 2024.
I can’t wait to meet up with them again in person soon! It absolutely warms my heart to be able to collaborate with such incredible humans.
