Multicultural Philadelphia wedding
There’s so many positives to being a wedding photographer, but one of the most obvious wins is connecting with marriers like Anika and Tess. They originally reached out prior to the pandemic and handled postponements so gracefully. Which made me appreciate them even more. We were able to get to know each other over a Facetime photo session and even crossed paths randomly at their venue, Bartram’s Garden, when Philadelphia opened up a bit more. Their multicultural Philadelphia wedding ceremony will always stand out to me as being such a moving example of what it can look like to blend different cultures. In this case, merging shared values found in Anika’s background of Hinduism and Unitarianism, and Tess’s background of Reconstructionist Judaism.
Thoughtful ceremony moments
There were so many thoughtful moments during the day, from the couple’s friends and family performing a song for the couple’s introductions to the lighting of the lamps by the marriers’ mothers. Sarah of Salt Floral (for Vault + Vine) created a breathtaking chuppah/mandap structure to surround Anika and Tess when they wed. The marriers had seven steps and seven blessings, which merged their Hindu and Jewish cultures. Tess’s aunt read the historic Supreme Court decision in Obergefell v. Hodges to acknowledge their gratitude for those who fought for their freedom to marry. Seeing the couple exchange fresh garlands and rings while Anika’s aunts sang behind them was powerful. Their ceremony wrapped with the breaking of the glass as a symbol of them overcoming any obstacles they face. I was so lucky to be joined by Sabrina of SGW Photography. She is always a pleasure to have as a second photographer.
The dance floor never had a slow moment. Everyone was clearly excited to show their love for Anika and Tess. After the reception wrapped, Anika DJ-ed an afterparty in an on-site barn, which is a level of cool I can only wish to know vicariously. I don’t doubt that we will cross paths again. Until then, I’ll bask in the warmth that is their photos.
