There’s been a lot of talk on Threads about what is appropriate work attire for wedding photographers. Many believe that all black is the way to go and wouldn’t dare consider wearing sandals. When I run into this thinking from fellow business owners, it reinforces the gratitude I feel for being privileged enough to collaborate with such vibrant clients.
Queer-friendly Philadelphia wedding venue: Awbury Arboretum
Pegah and Evan encouraged guests to wear bright attire that would match their garden vibes at their Awbury Arboretum wedding. There’s something incredibly special about queer marriers being boldly who they are and picking a palette as colorful as their personalities.
Around the time I started being more outward-facing with my values, my professional attire shifted from wearing all black to allowing myself to be more playful. Less invisible. Which it turns out, often blends in better with guests, anyway. (Though nothing is wrong with wearing all black if that’s your aesthetic, plus it hides sweat, which is a win.) Clients encourage me to be myself and even cheer me on when I arrive in lemon print shirts.
Pegah and Evan’s ceremony had so many thoughtful touches. The Sofreh Aghd–an Iranian spread rich in symbolism; a honey ceremony, a sugar rubbing ritual; the lighting of wild rue to circle their heads; and jumping the broom.
During social hour, two goats from the Philly Goat Project surprised guests. Leading into the reception, everyone circled around the couple for an Iranian Knife Dance.
Pegah and Evan’s joyful wedding personified a quote that I love from Da’Shaun L. Harrison so much I have it on a shirt:
“To be visibly queer is to choose your happiness over your safety.”
Thanks to Pegah and Evan for trusting me to document your day and being such a shining example of what love can look like.

Marvelous!!
