American Swedish Historical Museum Wedding | Amanda + Brian

Black and white portraits of a bride getting ready at American Swedish Historical Museum

When I wrapped up my busiest week of the season with Amanda and Brian’s wedding at American Swedish Historical Museum, something happened for the first time in my 14 years of photographing weddings. I left feeling more energized than when I started out the week.

There’s something special about collaborating with individuals who inspire you to do your best. And it didn’t hurt to have the red and white glow of the cityscape surrounding us, with the Phillies game projected in the background at the end of the night.

American Swedish Historical Museum

I’ve worked at countless Philadelphia wedding venues, but the American Swedish Historical Museum always stands out as a favorite. And not just because it offers a massive free parking lot for guests and vendors, which is rare in Philadelphia. The American Swedish Historical Museum is the oldest Swedish-American museum in the United States. ASHM is partnered with JAM Catering and located nearby the Sports Complex in South Philadelphia at FDR Park. The Park itself has an incredible variety of photo location options, from the gazebo and boathouse to the dock behind it with views of the water.

The Museum is airy and beautiful, with a painted ceiling and wall murals that complement the design of the 12 permanent galleries, including a library. And JAM Catering makes things less stressful for marriers by taking care of things like catering, rentals, florals, and coordinating.

More Inclusive Philadelphia Wedding Vendors

This was my second wedding in a row that week with DJ Amber, who always makes the day go by faster when we work together. I had my gear all packed up at the end of the night, but when I heard Sum 41 start playing, my 11th grade self insisted I get back out onto the dance floor. Amber is incredible to work with, especially for marriers who are hoping to find more inclusive wedding vendors in the Philadelphia area.

There’s so many moments that I won’t forget from Amanda and Brian’s wedding day. The first look they conceptualized to take place in front of the large windows upstairs at the American Swedish Historical Museum. The friends and family who kindly and patiently joined us as we explored different rooms for group photos. The mismatched vintage china, handmade hot sauce favors, mashed potato bar, and floral place cards. Friends (and chefs) placing a dollop of caviar on their hands during social hour to say cheers with fish roe. Three generations of women joining hands as the matriarch is gleefully led out to dance to “Party Up” by DMX.

The day–much like the couple–was one to remember. As always, I have so much gratitude for this job and the people I get to meet and work with along the way.
