Working with a disabled wedding photographer
So often, my brain likes to focus on the weddings I don’t book versus the marriers who trust me to document their day, and how fulfilling it is to have them put their faith in me. Hannah and Marine’s email inquiry was one that energized me and affirmed why I still do this work. Marine and Hannah heard from their friends that working with me as a queer, disabled wedding photographer was affirming for them. They shared that one of them is chronically ill and it never occurred to them to seek out a disabled wedding photographer, but once they knew it was an option, it seemed perfect.
This industry, like many others, often prioritizes youth (and the non-disabled) and the next shiny thing at the best rate. It means a lot to me that people still choose me.
How the marriers met
Marine and Hannah met at lunch in high school during their senior year. They were friends for years in separate cities until their relationship blossomed after being reunited once more in Philadelphia.
Hannah described Marine as making her feel safe, and as someone who is always learning and growing–making her want to be better. Marine shared she values how Hannah makes people feel seen and cared for. And that her outlook on the world and connections to other people changed the way she approaches life.
It always impresses me when marriers sew their own pieces, so hearing that Marine was making her own attire was lovely. So many moments from their wedding were similarly thoughtful.
Their chuppah was a group craft project, with 1,000 paper cranes hanging from it, which they folded with the help of their friends. On top was a tablecloth from Hannah’s grandmother, which was hand-mended by her sisters. The structure was borrowed from her oldest friend, who used it at her wedding.
Merion Tribute House castle wedding in the Main Line
Hannah and Marine’s wedding took place at Merion Tribute House, a castle-like venue that was built in 1924. The day was colorful and celebratory, with a DIY floral crown making table for guests to explore during social hour.
At one point, the band played “Love Like You,” from Steven Universe. I wanted to wrap by sharing some of my favorite lyrics from the song:
“Look at you go, I just adore you, I wish that I knew, What makes you think I’m so special.”
Thanks to Hannah and Marine for having me. I had a total fanboi moment when I saw Gen installing baby’s breath in the archways. The entire vendor team was a pleasure to work alongside, including Empire Vegan and Swig Events, who were so kind and joyful.
